Preparing for Your Portrait Session
Choosing a location: Many people prefer to have the seating in their own home, as it requires a minimum of travel time for the subject (usually, none!), and offers a degree of comfort. Lighting equipment requires some room (8 feet by 10 feet at a minimum) and a grounded power outlet. However, outdoor locations such as monuments, fountains, or other local features all provide excellent places for a portrait. When you book your appointment, we will choose a suitable location to get the look you want for your portrait.
What to wear: Portraits are about people, not clothing, so wear something that won't distract from your face. Solid colors work best, but subdued patterns may also yield good results. Also, consider how you'd like to pose. If you want a formal portrait (either seated or standing), you should wear more formal clothing. For a less traditional look, choose more casual clothing that allows for free movement. Remember that these are guidelines, not rules; your portraits are yours, and ultimately you make the decision about what to wear.
What to expect: A formal in-home portrait sitting begins with some basic equipment set-up (a background and some lights on stands), which usually takes about 15 minutes. Next we will spend a few minutes making sure I understand what you want in your portrait, and what (if anything) you would like to avoid. In a half-hour appointment, I can usually accommodate one to three poses.
After the sitting: It takes about a week to review & edit your photos and to prepare a package. What you receive will depend
on your arrangements with me, but you can expect a disc with the images on them.
Your photos will be kept on file for at least 1 year to allow you to request retouching, enlargement, or other services.
